This urban condominium remodel was designed as an inviting and dynamic gathering place, seamlessly integrating social connection, city views, and music. Serving as both a guest retreat and an entertainment lounge, the modern industrial design balances refined comfort with cultural vibrancy.
Design Vision
The clients’ vision was clear – transform an existing family-oriented condominium into a chic guest residence and entertainment lounge that reflects their social lifestyle. Inspired by the neighborhood’s thriving arts scene, the design seamlessly blends social connection, city views, and music, creating a sophisticated, modern escape distinct from their nearby primary residence.
Contextual Considerations
The remodel was shaped by the constraints of the existing structure, requiring creative solutions to maintain aesthetics and functionality around fixed elements, such as plumbing and structural concrete walls. The wooden ceiling beams, a defining architectural feature, posed challenges for lighting integration. To address this, the design team utilized linear tension strip lighting, up lighting the ceiling panel and beams. Additional beams were added to maintain this dramatic rhythm. The linear fire feature, repositioned from the corner of the room to a defined centerline, becomes a dominant focal point in the room. The axial organization preserves an open airy feel while defining clear circulation to support various entertainment activities.
Lasting Impression
The design embraces a modern industrial style, blending urban sophistication with a sleek, moody backdrop. A bold black-and-white palette, enriched with rift-cut oak, metal, and leather, sets the tone. Lighting plays a pivotal role in creating ambiance and provides layered illumination. In the kitchen, subtle accents pair with a bold linear fixture over the island enhancing the atmosphere without overwhelming the space.
A custom beverage bar and hi-fi record console flank the linear fire feature at the heart of the lounge. Thoughtfully selected furnishings complement the industrial aesthetic, offering both comfort and style. Textured fabrics and velvet chairs offer subtle doses of color, adding tactile richness and a touch of luxury throughout the room.
The lounge is arranged with multiple seating groupings in a hotel-lobby-inspired layout, encouraging engagement from all angles. Rather than a traditional dining table, the kitchen island serves as a social anchor for casual dining, cocktails, and conversation. Every detail—artwork, accessories, and organic forms—was curated to evoke a sophisticated hotel rooftop bar atmosphere, where the sights and sounds of the city are embraced in the rhythm of the home’s design.
By weaving elements of art, entertainment and connection into its very fabric, the design becomes a true reflection of the client’s love for Milwaukee’s cultural scene and their passion to entertain and engage in a meaningful way.
