For the preservation issue of Old House Journal, Nicholas Blavat spoke with Peter B. Thomsen about the Gilded Age Restoration project. The 1890s Gothic Revival home in Milwaukee’s Historic District offers a gorgeous artisan detail yet lacked many of today’s conveniences. With the renovation, the home welcomes a modern refresh with a transitional aesthetic, while staying true to the integrity of the home’s historic elements.

“Houses pass not only from owner to owner but, often, from architect to architect. For two decades and across three different owners, just one firm [Deep River Partners] has been acting as steward to this stone Tudor in the dense historic district of Milwaukee.”
For the lower level speakeasy, “it took extensive structural engineering to create a habitable space. The unavoidably low ceilings were mitigated by clever ductwork and a light, airy paint color. The result is a cozy recreational suite that rivals the upstairs kitchen as the home’s entertaining hub.”
