The Stepping House

Modern Custom Lake House, Elkart Lake WI

Architecture & Interior Design

Nestled in the hills and trees surrounding Wisconsin’s Elkhart Lake, this terraced, “Stepping House” maximizes the benefits of lakefront living—supporting an energetic lifestyle in a quaint setting.

Lifestyle Considerations

This outgoing family was ready to transform an old family retreat into a modern lake home. The elongated lakeside lot with neighboring properties in close proximity, called for emphasis on the site’s assets. Transparent lake views, ample natural light, and blended living spaces were prioritized as well as honoring the homeowner’s ancestry in the shipping industry.

Distinctive Features

A multi-level design solution thoughtfully responds to the compact site, unfurling into an open and spacious four-bedroom, six-bath residence while maintaining privacy and elegance. The three-level floor plan is open, both horizontally and vertically, to maximize socializing and views in all rooms. A fully open lower level features a full bath to refresh after a day on the lake, and a central bar as the hub for socializing.Construction types from temperate climate zones inspired the design. Clean lines, blended exterior/interior living spaces, and large glass walls lend themselves well to this lakeside site. Privacy is preserved from neighboring homes with rising stone walls that give way to transom windows for access to natural light and tree canopy views. The horizontal and vertical forms create visual interest and are reinforced with style treatments of natural materials, including stone, walnut, cedar and oak. Warm neutrals and textures offer a connection to the natural surroundings. These elements create a synergy and allow the modern home to elegantly emerge from the hillside with the deck’s form stretching like a ship’s bow from the hillside to the water.
