Architecture & Interior Design
This 1930’s residence had a front door that faced the River Parkway while its kitchen and side door faced the street for everyday use.
Design Objectives
The design solution switched this arrangement so the Kitchen could take advantage of the river view and the Front Entry would welcome guests from the street side. A new Front Porch supports this entrance identity. In the process special attention was given to a new Mud Room, Home Office, and a large Kitchen for cooking, hobbies, and family dining.
Distinctive Features
The new Kitchen now has a view of the parkway and is flooded with natural light from the over-sized box window. The built-in dining table, while connected to island, is designed as a separate furniture piece for the family dining experience. The off-white tones of the painted millwork enlarge the space and complement the existing painted trim of the ear. The new rear door connects to the grilling terrace and the expansive view of the Parkway. The new Front Porch at the street side marks the new entry sequence and welcomes the visitor as it provides shelter. Reuse of the original front door beckons the home’s historical roots. By connecting the new Foyer to the existing Stair and new Kitchen beyond, circulation was improved and expands the visual size of the interior.
