Modern Makeover

Modern Exterior Deck Remodel, Cedar Grove (Lake Michigan), WI

Architecture

To update a summer retreat on the shores of Lake Michigan, a new, fresh, and modern aesthetic was the focus of the exterior renovation.  The residence lacked identity at the Front Entry, an important feature when welcoming guests.  The Lake Porch and Terraces were not large enough for dining and lounging, provided no shade, and did not take advantage of the panoramic views of the lake.

Design Vision

The design solution responded the client’s need by redefining the exterior color palette and by adding deck, column and pergola features.  Staining the existing faded brick charcoal grey and applying a white stucco band provided a crisp contrast in materials and a relief that breaks down the massing of the existing facade while reinforcing a new modern aesthetic. White columns and beams with metal infill purlins form pergolas that create rhythm and volume while giving a visual cue to mark the Front Entry and the new Outdoor Dining Area.

Distinctive Features

The new Ipe decks gently terrace down from the first floor level and reinforce the modern horizontal lines. Bluestone paving steppers create circulation paths to the Lakeside Deck and Fire Patio. New luxuries included a beach shower, integrated grill with flanking stainless steel cabinets, sleek path lighting, and minimal cable railing for optimal viewing of the beach and lake.

“Timeless design aesthetics with a penchant for maximizing the utility of the home. The results were exactly what we were looking for-right sized, highly functional space.”
